Heritage
I grew up on the little island of Malta which has inspired this body of work. It is underpinned by the long history of colonisation which has become inevitably interwoven into the fabric of the Maltese heritage, culture, tradition and identity which continues to change throughout generations.
An analysis of two Maltese intergenerational traditions of fishing and lacemaking revealed to be uncannily similar. Fishermen, their fathers, sons, brothers and uncles would gather to make, as well as repair their nets, share stories and sing folk songs. Similarly, their wives, mothers, daughters, sisters and aunts would make intricate patterns in lace accompanied by stories and songs. I use repurposed materials which also carry their own story.
Contemporising the goddess of Fertility was an experiment of current silhouettes and trends in which she embodies numerous identities, represented as eyes, throughout generations. The eyes are also symbolic elements borrowed from religion, oral history and myth.
