Migration
Migration is a celebration of people from all different backgrounds coming together. It encourages new ways of thinking, seeing and communicating.
I cannot ignore the current sorrowful news about migrants dying at sea; not making it to their destination while desperately trying to seek a better future. However I also want to share the joyful side of migration; the wonderful, diverse and fascinating multicultural world we live in.
I am particularly interested in the little island of Malta, where I grew up. Our culture is underpinned by its rich history. Through time, the different influences from a variety of colonies, have become interwoven into the fabric of Maltese heritage. Migration explores two Maltese uncannily similar intergenerational traditions; fishing and lacemaking. Fishermen, their fathers, sons, brothers and uncles would gather to make, as well as repair their nets, share stories and sing folk songs. Similarly their wives, mothers, daughters, sisters and aunts would make intricate patterns in lace accompanied by stories and songs. I use repurposed materials which also carry their own story.
